Marine Electronics: Chart Apps for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch Apps
February 27, 2011 by admin · Leave a Comment
A lot of marine enthusiasts are exploring capability on their iPhone these days for charting, GPS and marine weather apps. iPhone apps are usually low priced and often quite effective, especially for casual boaters who don’t have the budget for fancy marine electronics. One of the things people love most about iPhone marine apps is the ability to use charts for planning purposes even when you are not on the boat or out on the water. Many iPhone marine charting apps also run on iPod Touch and the newest in the Apple line of electronic wizardry, the iPad. Check before you purchase. Many apps are very low cost, so even if you have high end electronics on board, a few inexpensive iPhone charts can provide a great backup in case something goes wrong with your primary marine equipment for some inexplicable reason.
Here is the run down on a few of the more popular iPhone apps that might interest boaters and fishermen: Marine Charts for iPod, iPhone and iPad: iNavX™ This app includes NOAA RNC raster marine charts for the United States. The app allows you to leverage GPS to plot your position and gives you access to thousands of charts for Canada, U.S. Coastal waters, Alaska, Hawaii and the US Virgin Islands. It allows you to set waypoints and plot routes using the GPS tracker, and interfaces with Google Earth, GPX import/export, and GRIB weather forecast among others. It can also act as a repeater to support NMEA data over TCP/IP. That means you can use it to connect with other devices that use NMEA standard including Mac compatible applications such as MacENC™. iNavX retails for .99 at the Apple store. There are also versions available for 3G and 3GS. Navionics Marine Charting Software Navionics won awards for their innovative marine and lake charts iPhone app in 2009. The 2010 version is a little more pricey (up from .99 to .99) but lets you do even more. As well as keeping you on track with the GPS and Charting applications you can check tides and currents, sun and moon phases and interface directly to Facebook to post pics of your travels for friends and family to view instantly. You can also send tracks and routes to Google Earth. You can even use the app offline (where there is no wi-fi coverage) to plan routes and create a travelogue. You buy Navionics Marine charts for specific regions so you can buy Marine: US West, Marine: US East, etc. Using apps for your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or 3G wireless phone is a convenient and inexpensive way to try out various software and see if you like it enough to invest in a boat-mountable marine chart system. It is also a useful backup to your primary electronics and may free you up from the need to lug a laptop on board with you.

David Banner to Launch Fitness App for iPhone
February 26, 2011 by admin · Leave a Comment
Banner was born in Chicago, Illinois, according to the newspaper RedEye.He was raised in the Virden Addition or Queens Area neighborhood of Jackson, Mississippi. Banner attended Northwest Jackson Middle School and is a graduate of Provine High School. Banner then attended Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he served as president of the Student Government Association, received a bachelor’s degree in business, and also became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He attended the University of Maryland, College Park to pursue a master’s degree in education.
After regaining control of his spiraling health in 2008, rapper David Banner has teamed up with interactive fitness company PumpOne to concoct a new iPhone/iPod weight loss application. The new app, called ‘David Banner’s Work Out or Die,’ will provide subscribers with workout regimens and weight loss advice Banner found effective during his struggle to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Banner, after clocking in at 225 lbs, put himself on a fitness regimen that allowed him to drop 57 lbs in three months time. Pressing health concerns, which included sleep apnea, high blood pressure and the threat of diabetes made weight loss an urgent situation for the Southern rapper.
“People are really interested in how I lost weight,” Banner told AllHipHop. Banner says that the number of friends and fans who sought out his advice on successful weight loss tips prompted him to create a program to effectively share his strategies. “One of my friends that works at Apple said, ‘You need to take it to your people and stop talking about it. You’re helping people’s lives. That’s a way for you to continue that movement.’ And I decided to do it.”
PumpOne, a fully-rounded enterprise, which incorporates traditional books, physical therapy and fitness programs, launched its first iPhone application in 2008. The company has partnered with several fitness magazines in an attempt to launch easy to use applications, eliminating the nuisance of collecting fitness advice from various editorials.
Banner’s application is scheduled for an early 2010 launch.

Are there any running apps for the iPhone that have a voice trainer and allow you to listen to music?
February 25, 2011 by admin · Leave a Comment
Question by Soph: Are there any running apps for the iPhone that have a voice trainer and allow you to listen to music?
Tomorrow morning I was gonna start running regularly, and I’d heard that iPhone apps (given that I have and iPhone) are a good way to get running! (: So, are there any apps that let you listen to music but also have the trainer’s voice? Preferably free :p
Best answer:
Answer by Matt
My friend Benjohn wrote the one called “Get Running”. It’s not free, but it is cheap, and there’s a free Lite version you can use to try the first week.
It’s based on the “Couch to 5K” plan, which is designed to take complete beginners through to running 5km. It’s a 9-week plan, and it worked for me! It has voice prompts, and is one of the few apps that are clever enough to fade the music down, play the trainer’s voice, and fade the music back up again, so you can actually hear the instructions. The others I’ve tried mix the voice with the music and often you can’t hear it very well.
